Ask a parent whether their child’s car seat is installed correctly, and chances are they’ll say yes. But a staggering 73 percent of car seats are not installed or used correctly. Safe Kids Worldwide, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping kids safe, wanted to impact this statistic by offering parents and caregivers a single, easy-to-use resource for car seat safety best practices.
Software for Good partnered with the team of car seat safety experts at Safe Kids Worldwide to develop The Ultimate Car Seat Guide. This web app, which offers personalized recommendations for children from birth through teen, presents caregivers with the most important considerations for their child in four categories: buying, installing, fitting, and moving to the next seat. Users enter their child’s age and weight, and the web app delivers tailored content based on their unique needs. Don’t have age and weight information handy? A “basics” section of the app offers the most important information in each category for parents or caregivers looking for general best practices.
In addition to coming up with the personalized delivery concept, we worked with the experts at SKW to plan and develop a content matrix that would deliver appropriate content based on various age and weight combinations. After entering the child’s information, users get a series of cards they can easily click or swipe through to view their car seat safety tips. A drawer at the bottom of each card houses bonus tips in each category—a flexible content feature requested by the team at SKW. Images and videos give busy parents a helpful visual aid, making complicated information much easier to understand. The responsive site was built in WordPress to accommodate SKW’s ongoing need to update content and imagery as safety guidelines evolve.
The app’s clean user experience, friendly color palette, and responsive design were a hit: The Ultimate Car Seat Guide quickly became 20% of Safe Kids Worldwide’s overall site traffic.
